Our conviction
At First Baptist Church of Steamboat Springs, we believe the King James Bible is the completely trustworthy, preserved Word of God in English. It is the Bible we preach, teach, study, and use as our standard.
This is more than an appreciation for familiar language. It is a conviction about the authority of Scripture. We want our church to open the Bible with confidence that God’s Word is true and that it is sufficient to direct our faith and life.
God gave His Word.
The Bible does not rest on human wisdom or religious opinion. Scripture was given by inspiration of God. Because God is its source, it has authority over the church, the preacher, and every believer. We do not place our preferences above what God has said.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:”2 Timothy 3:16 · KJV
God’s Word endures.
We believe the God who gave His Word has also preserved it. Our confidence is not merely that God spoke in the past, but that His Word remains trustworthy today. We receive the King James Bible with that confidence.
“The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.”Isaiah 40:8 · KJV
We do not describe the Bible as a book that is almost dependable. We believe it is God’s infallible Word, and we approach it as truth to be believed and obeyed.
One Bible for our church’s teaching.
Using the King James Bible consistently gives our congregation a shared text for public reading, preaching, memorization, and discipleship. Children learning verses, adults studying a passage, and the preacher explaining that passage can work from the same wording.
Our aim is faithful exposition: explaining the meaning of the passage in its context and applying its truth carefully. A preacher’s task is not to make the Bible say what he wants, but to help people understand what God has said.
We help people understand it.
Some words and expressions in the King James Bible are unfamiliar to modern readers. We believe that calls for patient teaching. When a word needs explaining, we explain it. When the setting or context needs attention, we study it. Questions are an opportunity to learn.
Our use of language resources is to clarify the meaning of Scripture, not to stand above the Bible or undermine confidence in it. You do not have to be a language scholar to hear the gospel, trust Christ, and grow through God’s Word.
The purpose is faith and obedience.
Knowing which Bible we use is important, but possessing a Bible is not the same as believing its message. Scripture points us to the Lord Jesus Christ and teaches us how to live for Him. We want to read it prayerfully, receive it humbly, and obey it faithfully.
